Full Fibre Broadband but not as you know it

Full Fibre

The Red Penguin Group is excited to announce some new fantastic Full Fibre broadband connectivity options for small businesses. If you want rock solid and fast connectivity with a business grade SLA then read on!

We are keen to help out businesses get better value for their connectivity during these unprecedented times of economic hard ship and we are constantly being made aware of small businesses that have signed up to extortionate connectivity deals on lengthly inflexible contracts that offer speeds that are not fit for purpose.

There is a better way with our Full Fibre connectivity, offering all the benefits of a leased line with none of the high costs and lengthy install times.

A quick run down..

Before we get to involved in what shiny new products we have its worth mentioning the basics of connectivity. So ‘broadband’ internet comes in a multitude of flavours with a multitude of delivery mechanisms so here is a brief summary:

  • ADSL Broadband is a broadband connection sent down copper analogue phone wires into your premises by your phone line, it does not use any fibre cables. Its been around for ages and back in the days of low res images and text only websites (when cloud storage was the stuff of dreams) it worked fine. Typically ADSL speeds max out around 20Mbps which is ok for 1 or 2 computers with the occasional foray into a bit of standard def Netflix. As a business tool it is ok for 1 or 2 users with low key requirements (web surfing / email / online banking etc). ADSL comes as either a residential or business product. Business ADSL usually just means a slightly better router included, static IP addresses and better tech support if it goes wrong (SLA – Service Level Agreement). ADSL is really used by people who cannot get any other service.
  • Fibre – This is still often sent down your phone line (unless its Virgin then its special cables) but crucially part of the connection will be via Fibre Optic cable (hence the ‘Fibre’ in fibre broadband). Typically most services are ‘FTTC’ which means its Fibre to the Cabinet – So the green BT Open Reach boxes on the street have Fibre cables going into it with the last stretch to your premises via standard copper cable. Because the connection only relies on a short run of old school cable speeds are typically 40+ Mbps , You can also get FTTP or Fibre to the Premises but this is quite rare and usually is only put into new builds or if you or someone pays for Open Reach to dig up the street. As with ADSL you can get residential grade and business grade. All our fibre packages are business grade so have faster/more robust SLA’s and dedicated contacts if something goes wrong (no need to call a call centre in Darfur)
  • Leased Lines – The ‘daddy’ , ‘numero uno’ , ‘top banana’ what ever you call it leased lines are the best you can get in terms of internet connectivity. In a nutshell a leased line connection is a cable specifically and exclusively for you and you alone. The cable that comes to your premises is dedicated for you with big speeds on offer. SLAs are as good as they get with reported problems usually guaranteed acknowledgement within hours of failure and fixes usually guaranteed not long after (with compensation if a fix is not sorted). You will typically see speeds listed at 100/1000 or ‘100Mbps on a gigabit’ – What this means is that the ‘pipe’ can support 1000Mbps or gigabit but your connection is 100Mbps. In other words you can pay for 100Mbps to start with then increase speed up to 1000Mbps if required (obviously for a cost). If a leased line shows as 100/100 then your 100Mbps connection is as fast as it gets. Typically our leased lines start at 100Mbps (already faster than most Fibre connections) and go up to 1000Mbps or more – At these speeds you are looking at being able to handle hundreds of users at the same time – no problem.

The downside of leased lines is they are expensive! typically hundreds per month often with a construction cost up front for engineers to run cables into your premises – this alone can be several £1000’s , Agreements are often for 3-5 years so flexibility within the contract can also be a stumbling block and it can takes months for the connection to go live (whilst you wait for roads to be dug up).

So they are the basic connections on offer – there are subtle variations and other less well known types such as satellite broadband and WiMax but these are very niche circumstances so outside the scope of this blog.

What’s new to the party I hear you ask

Introducing our new Full Fibre broadband, This offers ultra fast full fibre connectivity to all areas of Nottingham in NG1, NG2, NG3, NG4, NG5, NG5, NG7, NG8 and NG9 post codes at prices from just £220 per month for a 100MB connection or £310 for a gigabit connection – That’s 1000MB!. That is far less than a traditional leased line of similar speed but with all the same features. You still get matched up/down speeds (100/100 or 1000/1000 etc), a resilient Service Level Agreement, 5 dedicated static IP addresses and its uncontended

On average most customers would pay in excess of £300 for a 100MB leased line with SIGNIFICANT construction costs of £500 all the way up to tens of £1000s. Read more here

Because our Full Fibre package uses infrastructure already laid down along the Nottingham tram lines we don’t charge these costs and you simply pay a very competitive monthly fee.

Another major benefit of having the infrastructure already in place is that our product can be in place in a fraction of the time of other providers – typical leased lines take 4-6 weeks or more – Not so with our Full Fibre product.
